Alpentourer Magazin

As of today you will spot the image of, and link to, the Alpentourer Magazin in the side bar. Stephan Fennel produces this German language motor touring mag and does a great job at it. Even if you don’t read/speak German it stil lis a great source of photos and routes for ‘anything European Alps’ and motor touring. The website has tons of information too, so well worth a visit. DUTCH Edition: yes, there is a Dutch Edition of this magazine as well, available here ! I’ll be adding more news on EuropeRides over the coming weeks, trying to get…

Next Rides and Activities

The good news: WINTER IS OVER ! You may think “well, duh!” But really, this winter has been the longest for many decades and although I have been riding our GS in France a few times along snow lined mountain roads, and the RT here in Holland in between frost periods, last week was the FIRST time THIS YEAR that Nina and I mounted up and rode along the West-Frisian country roads again! So what’s next? Ride whenever the sun is out !! AND….. …… the RT Treffen on APRIL 21st. That’s the now yearly meeting of BMW RT’s (mainly)…

Hotel Belvédère on the Pt. Saint Bernard Pass road

On the main connection between France and Italy in the eastern Alps, connecting the French Tarantaise region with the Italian Aosta Valley, lies this wonderfully equipped, motor-friendly hotel ! As you may remember, Nina and I checked them out earlier this year to get them their Motorrad-Tourer certificate of quality. And since we check upon the ‘partners’ once in a while, I found this nice Youtube video of the restaurant and breakfast room for you ! We also noticed that the new ‘motor cover’ has been finished, so now there is even more covered parking space for our stallions! I’ve…

New use for my smartphone

Of course you all being smart smartphone users, and I nothing but a rookie, you’ve all found this long time ago! But for me it was a brain wave! As Nina and I also hike the mountain trails in our are, besides riding the BMW, I always pack a lot of ‘ordnance maps’. I collect them too since many years. And so I actually hate using them because they get all crumpled, folded and tear on the folds eventually. Today it struck me that maybe I could copy part of the map by making a picture with my HTC smartphone.…

First Video Attempt

I am a photographer and really s**k at making video, but since this is our vacation and I happen to have a copy of Camtasia…. AND a ContourHD helmet camera, I figured I might as well upload my ‘doings’ anyway and share some of the awesome places we ride at! This first little video shows us riding through the ski resort of Méribel in the French Alps (Savoie region), down to our place in the small village of Les Allues. No need to watch it all….. I took out the sound because the camera has a fault in sound recording………

Certified Motorcycle Lodging

Motorrad-tourer from Berlin, Germany, has started a new service, called ‘Zertifizierte Unterkünfte’, freely translated as Certified Lodges. There are more such ‘groups’ or certifications, providing a sort of guarantee to motorcycle riders and -travelers that they’ll end up at hotels and other lodgings that will actually WELCOME them. Not all hotels do, you see! Note that I tend to use the term ‘riders’ and not ‘bikers’, since the latter seems to have a negative ring to it in both Europe and the US. I am happy to tell you that Nina and I have joined the group of ‘testers’ for…
